First Russian Immersion Program in the U.S. Institute Background
In 2004 the Anchorage School District, Anchorage, Alaska, established the first Russian Immersion Program in the U.S. The program was originally funded through a Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant through the U.S. Department of Education. Only three other Russian Immersion Programs exist in the U.S. ASD's program is K-12 and graduated our first group of seniors in 2016. The program starts at Turnagain Elementary, and matriculates to Romig Middle and West High Schools. The program is also supported by a non-profit Russian immersion parent organization called MIR Parents (http://mirparents.org). MIR sponsors several annual community events such as the Father Frost Festival and Maslenitsa.
