Brockton Public Schools - Capitalizing on Local Multilingual Assets for a Global Society Institute Background
Brockton Public Schools is a diverse public school system of approximately 15,000 students - of which 44.7% are First Language Not English (FLNE), 28.2% are English Learners (EL), and 7.5% are Former English Learners (FEL). 76.4% of its student population is low-income. With the mission of "Diversity, Equity, Unity", a priority of Brockton Public Schools’ superintendent is the promoting local assets in a global society, authentic representation of its students, and accessibility of educational opportunities in the district. Utilizing district collaborative structures, collaboration with business, university, and international organizations, and a large scale community survey, the district now offers the following:
The Manthala George Jr. Global Studies School provides dual language programs in French, Portuguese, and Spanish “empowers students to take an active role in their own learning…”.
Secondary dual language programs where students can take advanced language and AP classes, Humanities courses in target languages, International Baccalaureate Program, and electives in Film and Cinema, and Dance.
Brockton High School offers Heritage language courses for its students with a family/community background in Spanish.
Brockton High School implemented a medical interpretation certification program. Bilingual-bicultural Spanish, Haitian, and Cape Verdean students participated in a two-year program and an internship at a neighborhood health center Several graduates have been employed full-time. The school is now exploring expanding this program for legal interpretation.
The Seal of Biliteracy Program where student from any language can demonstrate their bilingualism and achieve the seal on their diploma.
