Online Language-Learning Tools for Endangered Languages Institute Background
7000 Languages a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, established in 2016. The mission is to empower communities around the world teach, learn, and sustain their endangered languages. 7000 Languages has published 48 online language-learning courses in 24 endangered languages, 13 of which are American Indian / Alaska Native languages. The program staff have backgrounds in language documentation, language revitalization, curriculum development, and Native education. 7000 Languages combines innovative technology tools with a focus on resources to meet the unique circumstances of Indigenous languages, such as incorporation of archived materials, best practices for eliciting and documentation language from elder speakers, as well as curriculum development that centers Native culture, practices, and ways of knowing.
In partnership with Transparent Language, a leading language-learning software company, 7000 Languages has full access to the complete suite of robust online course creation tools, trainings, and distribution licenses to the online language learning software application, donated at no cost to 7000 Languages and its community partners. The software works on computers, tablets and phones and includes engaging, interactive, and pedagogically sound language-learning activities that help teach learners vocabulary, grammar, culture. The software also incorporates images, audio and video to help the learner practice conversation skills and immerse them in the culture and traditions. The language learning materials may also be accessed online.
With this online tool, access is expanded to a wide variety of learners, including learners that do not reside within a Native language speaking community. The software is available to all ages of learners and can be used in tandem with in-person instruction or independently.
