French for Spanish Speakers Institute Background
At Fort Greene Preparatory Academy, our French Dual Language Program aims to serve students who have completed a (K-5) DLP for their continuation of speaking and learning in two languages. Our program is also designed to serve Students with Special Needs and English Language Learners.
As a French Dual Language Team, our goal is to build confidence in our students, who feel safe and empowered to take intellectual risks. We believe that learning in language immersion is optimized when student interest, sense of value, and comfort zone are top priority when designing curricula. Our experience has shown us that this is achieved through the application of Equity in Education and the usage of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy.

Explicit Example
Our partnership with NYU has shown to be highly effective with regards to access to language learning and enrichment. Students in the French Dual Language Program sign up for classes with NYU student volunteers on a weekly basis for supplementary support. The online classes are completely free and virtual. We are seeing a significant amount of progress with regards to confidence and proficiency.
We have also partnered with a tutor volunteer program on Monday afternoons. The tutor comes to provide in-class support for the last two periods of the day, and stays until 4 pm to provide additional after school assistance.
