The UCLA Russian Flagship is a unique language program designed to enable students to achieve professional-level competence in Russian at the undergraduate level through individualized attention from faculty and staff. The program is open to students of all disciplines and it is designed to integrate language study with a student’s major. Flagship students take courses in Russian language and area studies, with individualized study plans to complement their majors. All Flagship students receive tutoring in Russian and have the opportunity to study abroad for a summer and an academic year. Flagship graduates are prepared to take a leading role in the global market and are highly competitive for scholarships, graduate school and jobs.

Specific practices that are the reasons your HULs enjoy success in your program
Practice 1
The program has three tracks to accommodate the needs of students. For example, there are specific courses of study for beginners, heritage speakers, and those who have studied Russian before. Our faculty and counselors work closely with students to develop individual study plans that meet their needs and enable them to meet the requirements for their major while fulfilling the Flagship requirements.
Practice 2
In addition to customized coursework, students receive individualized tutoring starting in the second quarter of first-year Russian. Faculty work closely with tutors to address the specific needs of the students. When possible, students are paired with tutors whose majors align closely with their own.
Practice 3
Flagship is an opportunity program that attracts talented, driven, hardworking students of all ethnicities, including many minority students who view it as an opportunity that they can experience on the basis of their hard work. All students are supported through personalized mentoring and advising by Flagship instructors and administrative personnel, paying special attention to first generation students and ensuring that they are aware of opportunities for research and internships. The individualized advising, in general, also takes into consideration factors relating to students’ backgrounds. These opportunities have resulted in Flagship students’ high levels of achievement in securing scholarships.
