Ancient Greek, Chinese, French, Latin, Russian and/or Spanish. Institute Background
The World- Readiness Standards and Can-Do Learning objectives are the foundation of our work. One of our strengths is the grades 1-12 horizontal and vertical articulation both within and across languages. We have expectations of 90%+ use of the target language our in classrooms, grades 1-12, in order to provide immersion like experiences for all of our students. Glastonbury is fortunate to be able to provide a long sequence of language study. In this sequence not only do students develop superior listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, but they also develop an international perspective so necessary for cultural and economic productivity in the 21st century. World Language instruction begins in first grade and continues through 12th. Grades one through five learn Spanish; grade six students may add Chinese; in grade seven, students may begin the study of Chinese or Russian. Grades 9-12, students elect to study Ancient Greek, Chinese, French, Latin, Russian and/or Spanish. Advanced Placement courses are offered as well as Early College Experience classes. High school students participate in assessments to determine eligibility for the Connecticut Seal of Biliteracy - recognition of students having attained proficiency in two or more languages by graduation. During the 2019/2020 academic year, 172 of 199 tested students achieved the Seal of Biliteracy - two students in three languages and 12 students in two languages. Glastonbury has hosted the STARTALK Chinese and Russian programs for 13 consecutive years for elementary, middle and high school students to expand and improve the teaching and learning of strategically important world languages that are not now widely taught in the United States. The Department has successful reciprocal exchange programs; with sister schools in China, France, Italy, Russia and Spain. Immersion trips are offered to Salamanca, Spain and Quebec for middle school students studying Spanish and French respectively.
