Dual Language Spanish Immersion atJordan-Matthews High School, l Institute Background
Jordan-Matthews High School, located in rural NC, is a DL/I continuation program that strives to offer 50% of the school day in Spanish for the DL/I cohort. Approximately 18% of our 881-member student body participates in the DL program. Required core academic courses in Language Arts and Social Studies are taught in Spanish, and students complete the program as seniors by taking either Advanced Placement Spanish Literature and/or a college course taught remotely through UNC-Chapel Hill. This is the capstone school of a K-12 DL program in our district. The school encourages all students and the community to explore language and culture. The first graduating cohort in 2018 had co-valedictorians, both from the DL strand, one a native speaker of English and one a dreamer. Both received full university scholarships. The 2019 NABE essay winner was from the DL cohort. DL thrives in rural NC!

Newcomers welcome to join the program if proficient in both Spanish and English . Students who have exited the program can come back. We have a partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill, and we provide field trips (such as one last year to the North Carolina Museum of Art's exhibit on Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo) and have multiple native Spanish speakers visit classes of a variety of professions and cultures.
Increase Accountability by effectively meeting all learner needs
