Epiitendaagwak Ojibwemowin Institute Background
Epiitendaagwak Ojibwemowin roughly translates to “Ojibwemowin (the Ojibwe language) is held in high esteem.” Leech Lake Tribal College holds the language of our community, Ojibwemowin, in very high esteem. We are one of the only colleges or universities that has a first speaker of Ojibwemowin as an instructor of the language. We are also one of the few colleges that has two instructors dedicated to teaching Ojibwemowin. Our instructors use a variety of methods to teach including immersion activities, technology, games, and most importantly, humor. We understand the importance of language revitalization for Ojibwe people and know how useful and beneficial language learning is for all people. Because of this, LLTC requires all students to take at least one Ojibwemowin class in order to earn a degree, and many degrees require two semesters, and a student can take up to five semesters of Ojibwemowin at LLTC.
