Dual Language Programs, English-Spanish and English-Urdu Institute Background
Allen Jay Elementary serves over 440 students from different parts of the world. We strive to provide teaching and learning opportunities that promote critical thinking and develop positive interpersonal skills. We believe that Allen Jay is a place of innovation, exploration and education. Our school offers two Dual Language Programs, English-Spanish and English-Urdu. Our students are empowered to become lifelong learners reaching their full potential by exploring, engaging, explaining, elaborating, evaluating and integrating the arts.
Our Dual language programs provide content and literacy instruction to all students in both languages with the goal of developing a high level of proficiency in the first language, an adequate level of proficiency in the second language and grade level or above in academic performance. At Allen Jay we have a set of unifying values where being culturally different is a positive attribute.
Our programs follow an A/ B Schedule that allows for separation of languages. The percentage of partner language instruction must not decrease below 50% in order to maintain dual language designation.
With the support from Project EnACTeD (Engaging and Advancing Community-Centered Teacher Development), funded by the National Professional Development grant, UNC Greensboro partners with our school to offer teacher professional development and support family engagement for dual language program participants.
Since the inauguration of the programs in 2018, our program has been highlighted by the Council of Great City Schools, Learning Forward and the Guilford Educational Alliance. We were the recipients of the Spark Award in 2019 for doing innovative work to spark possibility for students.
The Urdu dual language program is the only one of its kind across the nation. Some of the challenges we have faced are finding authentic materials. Building strong relationships with our community has helped us find and create authentic materials, especially for our Urdu program.
