Colorado's only K-8 early total language immersion charter school offering both Chinese and Spanish Institute Background
The Denver Language School (DLS) is Colorado's only K-8 early total language immersion charter school offering both Chinese and Spanish. It is located in Denver, CO and has two campuses serving 890 students. DLS opened in 2010, and it is thriving! The school's mission is academic excellence and cultural competence through language immersion. The curriculum is taught entirely in the target languages with the goal of bilingualism and bi-literacy through the eighth grade for students. As a DPS public school, their curriculum is aligned with the Colorado State Standards and the Common Core National Standards scope and sequence. The target language is the language of instruction for all classrooms (except specials) in kindergarten, first, and second grade. English is introduced in 3rd grade with 80% of the school day taught in the target language for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. In the Middle School, DLS uses a 50/50 language immersion model where 50% of the instructional day is taught in the target language and 50% in English.
DLS received the Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award in 2014 and 2019 for exceptional student growth based on the school's performance framework used by the state to evaluate schools. Additionally, the school was the recipient of the John Irwin Award for Academic Excellence for demonstrating exceptional academic achievement over time, which is a critical component of excellent programs and exemplary leadership.
