Spanish Dual Language Immersion in Arizona Institute Background
Desert Willow started the first 50/50 Spanish Immersion program in Arizona more than 16 years ago and continues to be a leader in Immersion programs in the state. Over half of our students participate in the immersion program from kindergarten through sixth grade, and follow a continuation pathway through middle and high school. The Spanish immersion preschool on campus gives many students an extra boost of Spanish as well. Students who are not part of our immersion program are still learning Spanish language and culture through our World Language Experience classroom, Hola Amigos, which they attend twice each week. We have native Spanish teachers from Spanish-speaking countries around the world, including Spain, Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, and Honduras. We have been recognized by the Embassy of Spain as an International Spanish Academy since 2017 and are the only school in Arizona to hold this distinction. We are also members of the Arizona Dual Language Immersion Network and work with schools and teams across the state to share ideas and grow our practice as educators of language learners in immersion classrooms.
