District Leader in Dual Language Institute Background
Walnut HIll, a two-time National Blue Ribbon School is known for a tradition of excellence in student achievement that comes from the high expectations that teachers have for their students and for themselves, as well as refining proven practices and incorporating new innovations. The highlights of the academic programming and innovation at the school include both the Two Way Dual Language and Two Way Dual Language Gifted and Talented programs. Each program implements the 50/50 model for dual language ensuring that students receive a balanced pathway to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. Students receive instruction in both English and Spanish in all content areas that connect and build on ideas across classrooms in both languages. In the Dual Language TAG program, students are served in a homogenous Two Way Dual Language gifted classroom setting enhanced by our specially curated gifted and talented curriculum. Moreover, as a commitment to fostering global competency, all students receive instruction in Mandarin Chinese and participate in our Leader In Me Program to increase student voice and empowerment. In addition to this, all students begin utilizing the Common Instructional Framework which aligns with P-TECH and Early College High Schools to develop instructional coherence and prepare students to be successful in high school. Beginning in 6th grade all students will take all pre-AP courses in their core contents and be afforded the opportunity for additional language experiences in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. The staff at Walnut Hill is expanding and enriching our best practices to align seamlessly for our students in PK-8th grade as we are applying to become a transformation school in the Dallas Independent School District to increase access to our programming.
